Deborah Bryceson
Born in USA, studied history (University of Washington) before moving to Tanzania in 1971. Graduated with a BA and MA (Geography) from the University of Dar es Salaam. Moved to Oxford in 1981 to do a DPhil (Sociology) on African food insecurity. Employed at the Architectural Association (London), Universities of: Leiden (1992-2003), Birmingham (2003-2004), Glasgow (2009-2013) and did consultancy for various international agencies including the ILO, World Bank, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UK-DfID. Currently semi-retired with research associations at African studies centres at the Universities of Edinburgh and Uppsala. Her research topics include: African livelihoods, settlement patterns, urbanization, artisanal mining, transport, agriculture, gender and transnational families. Resident in Summertown for over 20 years.
